Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield was picking up more than just awards last week.
It’s been award show after award show for the Oklahoma quarterback, which has given the senior plenty of face time with some of the best players in the country.
One little-known aspect of college football’s awards circuit week for guys like Mayfield is the intel on upcoming opponents they pick up from other players, according to ESPN’s Ryan McGee.
McGee reports Biletnikoff Award winner James Washington of Oklahoma State was asked about Oklahoma from Georgia players. Washington didn’t diagram any plays or give them some super insightful answer.
The Cowboys receiver kept it simple.
“Baker Mayfield, Baker Mayfield, Baker Mayfield,” he said to Georgia players, according to McGee.
“Guy’s a player.”
The Oklahoma State player wasn’t lying. McGee writes that Mayfield was speaking with Kentucky senior linebacker Courtney Love likely about the Bulldogs as Washington was speaking with Georgia players.
“See? He’s playing right now,” Washington told the players, McGee reports.
It’s no surprise the ultra-competitive Mayfield would seek out any tips he can get to one up his opponents. Mayfield and Oklahoma players will undoubtedly look at film on Georgia, but the extra insight is always helpful.
