Baker Mayfield climbs to No. 2 on Matt Leinart’s ‘Heisman Hopefuls’ list

Baker Mayfield continues to climb the Heisman ladder.

Well, that’s at least the opinion of former Heisman winner and one of the greatest college quarterbacks in history — FOX Sports analyst Matt Leinart.

As part of his weekly ‘Heisman Hopefuls’ segment, Leinart listed the Oklahoma gunslinger at No. 2 moving him up one spot from his previous placement at No. 3, thanks in large part to a praiseworthy performance against a stout Texas defense last Saturday.

“Coming off that tough loss a couple weeks ago to Iowa State, he bounces back; big win against a rival in Texas,” Leinart said. “I thought he was phenomenal in that game and he made throws in key parts of the game. The touchdown to Mark Andrews really solidified the win.”

En route to guiding Oklahoma to a 29-24 Red River Showdown win over the Longhorns, Mayfield completed 17 of 27 passes for 302 yards and 2 touchdowns. Mayfield did throw his first interception of the season, but as Leinart noted, the senior may key plays at key moments and it proved to be enough to lift the Sooners to 5-1 on the season.

Collectively, Mayfield has now completed 117 of 161 attempts in 2017 for 1,937 yards and 17 touchdowns. His passer efficiency rating of 207.3 is the best in college football.

Now entering the second half of his final collegiate campaign, Mayfield will need to continue to build upon his current efforts in hopes of finally finishing in the Heisman race as more than a finalist.

Mayfield finished at No. 3 and No. 4 in the polls in 2016 and 2015, respectively.

Next up for Mayfield and the Sooners, Oklahoma will hit the road for a Big 12 showdown with Kansas State, which is set to kick off at 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 21.
