Baker Mayfield angered at concerns about his height

There aren’t many knocks on Baker Mayfield’s NFL potential, but among those is the former Oklahoma Sooner star’s height.

Well, Mayfield’s lack thereof, to be specific.

Despite compiling more college football awards than most NFL prospects could dream of, including the 2017 Heisman Memorial Trophy, Mayfield’s 6-foot stature remains cause for concern among professional scouts.

That’s a criticism Mayfield feels is quite unfair, as he detailed to Steve Serby of the New York post during a lengthy interview.

“It angers me when people say that height actually matters, because there’s guys in the NFL that prove it day in and day out that it doesn’t,” Mayfield said. “If you can pick up and throw a ball, you can. And if you can win games, you can. So a lot of that stuff that people used to think mattered a lot, those measurable don’t exactly anymore. It’s about winning games and getting your teammates to play hard.”

If it’s about getting teammates to play hard and win games, Mayfield certainly did much of that as a Sooner. Throughout his three years as Oklahoma’s starting gunslinger, Mayfield has received no shortage of praise from teammates, and along the way, led Oklahoma to 34 wins, a Big 12 Championship and a College Football Playoff appearance.

Not to mention, Mayfield’s personal accomplishment’s speak for themselves, as he compiled 14,607 yards and 131 touchdowns through the air and another 1,083 yards and 21 scores on the ground throughout his entire collegiate career. Mayfield also set the NCAA record with a passer efficiency rating of 196.4 in 2016, and then snapped his own record with a 198.9 rating in 2017.

In short, Mayfield was nothing short of exceptional as a Sooner and in 2017, he was quite easily the top player in college football.

Yet, despite all of that, Mayfield’s height remains a concern. As he notes, that shouldn’t be the case, and there’s plenty of proven passers categorized as having less than ideal height.

Just consider talents such as Michael Vick and Drew Brees.
