Auburn targeting Stanford defensive end commit Tobe Umerah

Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Auburn Tigers  football recruiting notebook with Auburn recruiting beat writer Benjamin Wolk. It’s Thursday, and we chatted with a Stanford commit who is considering Auburn. Also, here are some Under Armour nominees to watch.

Auburn catches eye of Stanford commit

Auburn hosted a Stanford commit last weekend.

Tobe Umerah is familiar with Auburn. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound defensive end from Stratford Academy (Ga.) visited the Tigers last summer for a camp and then for a couple games last fall. He didn’t receive a ton of attention from Auburn throughout the spring. He did pick up a Stanford offer, however, which resulted in his April commitment.

The Class of 2018 recruit stands pat with that commitment, but he’s thinking.

“It’s pretty strong, but I’m still open-minded,” Umerah said.

His Auburn offer, which he received in July 2016 at a summer camp — eight months prior to his Stanford offer — still holds. He spent much of his last Saturday chatting with Auburn coach Gus Malzahn and defensive line coach Rodney Garner about that.

During the game, he kept a close eye on Jeff Holland and Marlon Davidson.

Umerah liked what he saw.

“The defense looked really good. It was nice to see that,” Umerah said. “The defensive ends is what I looked at mainly. It was fun watching them. They could [make a move]. With their D-line, it looks really good to me where I fit in.”

Auburn isn’t the only team in contention for a potential flip.

Tennessee, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Duke and Penn State are the programs other than Stanford recruiting Umerah “actively.” There’s a high chance Umerah will return to the Plains for another game visit this year, but he’s not sure when that will be.

As for officials, that decision process hasn’t started yet.

“I’ve still got to decide where I’m going to take my officials. Stanford is definitely one, but I don’t even know where else yet,” he said.

Umerah is the No. 26-ranked weakside defensive end nationally. He’s the No. 480-ranked prospect overall.

Relevant Under Armour game invitations

Under Armour has been on its tour where it goes around the country honoring the top prospects in the nation with All-American Game jerseys. I went to Quindarious Monday’s ceremony, and there have been plenty of other relevant ones to Auburn.

There’s a high possibility I’ll be down in Orlando, Fla., for that event in December and January, so let me give you a list of the prospects to keep an eye on.

  • Quindarious Monday
  • Justin Fields
  • Quay Walker
  • Tommy Bush
  • Dylan Wonnum
  • Anthony Schwartz
  • Joey Gatewood
  • Emory Jones
  • Kearis Jackson

Those stories could be a variety of different things from that time, ranging from “Why’d you choose Auburn?” to “What could Auburn have done better?”

There are likely to be a few more Auburn-related players honored in the next couple days.
