Auburn football-Ryan Davis

Auburn football is the No. 1 topic in the War Eagle Wakeup every day — but we cover news, notes and analysis from across the Tigers’ sports world. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Auburn football, recruiting, basketball and more.

A lights-out defense

Auburn’s defense has shown out so far this season. Year 2 under Kevin Steele has exceeded expectations. Players are comfortable and perhaps even more fiery than in 2016.

There’s still a lot of football left to play, but Auburn’s defense has recorded 35 three-and-outs this season. That comes in at No. 7 in the nation.

In other Auburn football news:

First pro day in the books

Auburn basketball’s first-ever pro day was a success. A total of 34 scouts representing 24 NBA teams showed up to watch current Tigers work out.

Softball represents

Two former Auburn softball stars (of 56 total invitees) made the Amateur Softball Association’s initial invite list for the 2018 USA Softball Women’s National Team Selection camp.

Kasey Cooper and Emily Carosone will attend the camp, which will be held in Florida on Jan. 1-5. Those selected to the team will compete at the World Baseball Softball Confederation and the Women’s World Championship in Japan in August.

Cooper has made the national team the past two seasons and was a key member of the team that won gold at the 2016 WBSC World Championship.
