Another week, another formidable foe for Oklahoma, as the No. 9 Sooners are on the road for a Saturday afternoon Big 12 showdown with Kansas State.
The Sooners are enjoying a 5-1 start to the season and are considered a 14.5-point favorite over the Wildcats. But if Oklahoma is to avoid a second loss in three weeks, winning the battle in the trenches against a stout Kansas State line will be essential, as noted by Athlon Sports.
“If you give Mayfield time to make a play, chances are you’re toast as a defense. Looking to make sure that doesn’t happen is the stout combo of Walker and Geary. Both have a terrific arsenal of power rush moves that make them difficult to handle and they will certainly be a load to block for a Sooners line that is searching for consistency.”
Halfway through the season, Geary and Walker have proven to be a force for K-State. The former headlines the bunch with 21 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and 3 sacks this season, while Walker has added 13 tackles and 1 tackle for loss of his own.
As a team, though, Kansas State has tallied just 9 sacks for 58 yards this season, which is tied for No. 98 nationally. Now, the Wildcats will be tested with talking arguably the best quarterback they’ve seen all season in Baker Mayfield, who’s ability to make plays outside of the pocket has resulted in the Sooners allowing just 10 sacks this season.
To do, Kansas State will have to overcome an Oklahoma offensive line led by NFL offensive tackle prospect Orlando Brown. It’s a matchup the Wildcats may not be expected to win, but Geary and Walker will need to lead the charge and do just that if K-State is going to send Oklahoma home with its second upset loss of the season.
