Arkansas gets commitment from 2018 in-state CB LaDarrius Bishop

New Arkansas coach Chad Morris said at his introductory press conference he intends to build a fence around the state to keep the top recruits from heading elsewhere. Sunday evening, he received a major boost in accomplishing that for the 2018 class.

Arkansas landed the commitment of Ashdown (Ark.) cornerback LaDarrius Bishop late Sunday. His pledge came following an in-home visit with the new staff. He is a 3-star cornerback and the No. 5 overall prospect from Arkansas in the 2018 class according to the 247Sports composite.

Bishop (6-foot, 205 pounds) was previously committed to Mississippi State. He pledged to the Bulldogs last July over Arkansas and Oklahoma State. He’s recently been in the process of re-evaluating his options since Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen left for Florida shortly after the 2017 regular season. Alabama, Florida, Michigan, UCLA and TCU were among the programs that had contacted him in the past two weeks.

Known for his speed, Bishop is also a standout sprinter in track. He ran a 40-yard dash in 4.35 seconds at a Mississippi State camp last summer. In addition to cornerback, he was a wide receiver and kick returner at Ashdown.

“He has a different gear,”  Ashdown coach Matt Richardson said. “There’s times we’ll throw the ball up, it looks like it’s overthrown and there’s another gear that kicks in. He’s one of those kind of players that has extra in the tank and they know they can go get it.

“He can go get somebody on defense when he needs to or he can make something big happen on offense when it needs to happen.”

The Razorbacks now have 12 commitments in the 2018 class. Two others — WR Mike Woods and OL Silas Robinson — also committed Sunday.

With Bishop on board, Arkansas now has four of the top five 2018 recruits in the Natural State committed. The other is Earle (Ark.) 4-star quarterback Gerry Bohanon Jr., who is uncommitted and still considering the Hogs.

Arkansas freshman safety Montaric Brown, also from Ashdown, is Bishop’s cousin. The two are very close friends.
