Arizona State reportedly promotes WR coach Rob Likens to offensive coordinator

According to multiple reports, new Arizona State head coach Herm Edwards is expected to promote wide receiver coach Rob Likens to the position of offensive coordinator. The news was announced on Friday afternoon.

According to Sun Devil Source’s Fabian Ardaya, Likens told his players that he intended to interview for the position, made vacant when Billy Napier accepted the head coaching position at Louisiana-Lafayette. Edwards apparently did not take a lot of time to promote Likens, who has been the school’s wide receiver coach since 2016. He was previously the offensive coordinator at Kansas, and was the wide receivers coach for Cal under Sonny Dykes.

Likens promotion is already a popular decision with Manny Wilkins, the Sun Devils’ starting quarterback.

“I would love it,” Wilkins told Ardaya. “He’s somebody that brings a different level of passion to this game. He’s somebody who comes with intensity every day at practice, every day in the film room.”

The Arizona State staff has seen a mass exodus since Edwards’ arrival. In addition to Napier leaving, defensive coordinator Phil Bennett announced he was stepping down for personal reasons. Offensive line coach Rob Sale is expected to go with Napier to Lousiana-Lafayette.

Likens will be the Sun Devils’ fourth offensive coordinator in as many years, following Napier, Chip Lindsey and Mike Norvell.
