Approval rating for Tennessee football coach Butch Jones: You decide

Things seem to be coming to an end for the Butch Jones era in Tennessee.

The Volunteers have crumbled in the past month, dropping four consecutive SEC games. They lost to Florida on a Hail Mary, suffered one of the worst home losses in program history to Georgia, lost again to Will Muschamp and South Carolina, and once again got smashed by Alabama.

Tennessee is 0-4 in SEC play, and while the second half of the schedule is much softer with three of its final five games coming against Missouri, Southern Miss and Vanderbilt, it might not be enough for Jones to overcome. Grumors are just as popular as ever, and the fan support has begun to erode.

In the previous S EC Country Coaches Approval Poll rating, Jones came in with a 66 percent approval rating. That was down from 77 in the prior month. And that poll was conducted before the Florida game, and thus the four-game SEC losing streak.

If there is a saving grace, the Volunteers have made a quarterback switch to redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano. He has started the last two games for the Volunteers. And Tennessee does have an elite recruiting class lined up for the 2018 season,  as it has the No. 8 class in the country and the No. 3 class in the SEC.

Jones made $4.1 million in 2016. The Volunteers visit Kentucky this weekend in a game they cannot afford to lose.

Vote on Butch Jones’ approval rating

The SEC Country approval rating poll is designed to give an indication of fan happiness over a period of time.

Our formula is based on the percentage of respondents that select each answer. We multiply that percentage by the following factors: 1 (strongly approve), 0.67 (approve), 0.33 (disapprove) and 0.0 (strongly disapprove). In other words, if 50 percent of respondents select “strongly approve” and 50 percent select “approve,” the formula would be (50 x 1) + (50 x 0.67) = 83.5% approval rating.
