Approval rating for Ole Miss coach Matt Luke: You decide

Now that Ole Miss is past halfway into its season, Matt Luke now has seven games under his belt.

And the results so far, they are mixed. His team did rebound nicely against Vanderbilt, but has been thumped by Alabama and Auburn. The Rebels lost to LSU on Saturday and then reportedly lost quarterback Shea Patterson for the season.

Luke had been on Hugh Freeze’s staff since 2012 and served as the offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator. He also played at Ole Miss from 1995-98 and was a captain on the ’98 team. Luke has coaching experience from his time at Murray State, Tennessee and Duke.

Luke’s team can’t play in a bowl game because the school has imposed a bowl ban for the 2017 season. The school also awaits the results from its hearing with the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions, which took place on Sept. 11.

What’s worse looking ahead is that the current recruiting class is in the tank. The Rebels have just nine commits and have by far the lowest-rated signing class in the SEC —and ranks just No. 83 nationwide — for the 2018 cycle. That’s a far cry from the 2016 class, which ranked No. 5 in the country. Ole Miss is the only team in the SEC that does not have a commitment from a 4-star recruit.

In the previous   SEC Country approval poll, as he came in with a rating of 79, good for seventh.

Luke is set to make $1.1 million this season, a bump up in salary that came with his promotion. The Rebels wrap a three-game home stand when they host Arkansas on Saturday at noon ET.

Vote on Ole Miss coach Matt Luke’s approval rating:

About the numbers

The SEC Country approval rating poll is designed to give an indication of fan happiness over a period of time.

Our formula is based on the percentage of respondents who select each answer. We multiply that percentage by the following factors: 1 (strongly approve), 0.67 (approve), 0.33 (disapprove) and 0.0 (strongly disapprove). In other words, if 50 percent of respondents select “strongly approve” and 50 percent select “approve,” the formula would be (50 x 1) + (50 x 0.67) = 83.5 percent approval rating.
