Heading into the Florida-Georgia game, Jim McElwain’s career at Florida appears to be at a crossroads.
The Gators have dropped two in a row and sit at 3-3 in McElwain’s third year. The offense, which has shuffled quarterbacks once again, is still sputtering, and the defense is starting to slip due to injuries and a loss of talent.
And the Gators’ opponent in the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, the No. 3 ranked Georgia Bulldogs, have things going in the right direction. That could put even more pressure on McElwain.
As for the long term, it appears that recruits are buying in. The Gators have the No. 1 overall class for the 2019 recruiting cycle. And after a monster July, the Gators have the No. 2 recruiting class in the SEC in the 2018 recruiting cycle and the No. 8 class in the country. The Gators even landed their biggest commitment of the McElwain era, 5-star quarterback Matt Corral.
Earlier in the offseason, McElwain received a raise and a contract extension through the 2023-24 season, and will earn $4.4 million in 2017. In his first two seasons, he has led the Gators to SEC East titles, but they have lost to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game both times.
McElwain has fared well in previous editions of SEC Country’s approval poll but not the last one. McElwain finished with an 56.3 approval rating. That was a 30-point drop from August and moved him from fifth to 10th among SEC coaches.
The Gators take on Georgia on Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on CBS.
Vote on Jim McElwain’s approval rating
The SEC Country approval rating poll is designed to give an indication of fan happiness over a period of time.
Our formula is based on the percentage of respondents that select each answer. We multiply that percentage by the following factors: 1 (strongly approve), 0.67 (approve), 0.33 (disapprove) and 0.0 (strongly disapprove). In other words, if 50 percent of respondents select “strongly approve” and 50 percent select “approve,” the formula would be (50 x 1) + (50 x 0.67) = 83.5% approval rating.
