It didn’t take long for Auburn fans to get mad and turn on coach Gus Malzahn.
The Tigers have gotten off to a 6-2 start. But against the two best teams they’ve played so far, Clemson and LSU, the offense has not looked good and left Auburn fans very frustrated with Malzahn once again.
In addition to quarterback Jarrett Stidham, the Auburn offense is adjusting to new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey, who replaced Rhett Lashlee this past offseason. After the Clemson loss, Malzahn was already promising tweaks to the offense. It has been better, but not consistently.
Malzahn has not fared well in previous SEC Country approval rating polls. He has finished near the bottom of every ranking and came in with an anemic 28.7 ranking in September. Only Kevin Sumlin had a lower rating, and that was just barely, as the Texas A&M coach finished with a 28.3 rating.
Malzahn, who earned a salary of $4.7 million in 2016, is 41-20 overall and 22-15 in the SEC. The Tigers went 8-5 last season, which included an appearance in the Sugar Bowl. The Tigers also played both teams that appeared in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, losing to Clemson and Alabama.
The Tigers do have a brutal finishing stretch, which includes a game at Texas A&M as well as home games against the No. 1 and No. 3 teams in the country in Alabama and Georgia. The Tigers begin that finishing stretch on Nov. 4 against the Aggies, as the Tigers are on a bye this weekend.
Vote on Gus Malzahn’s approval rating
The SEC Country approval rating poll is designed to give an indication of fan happiness over a period of time.
Our formula is based on the percentage of respondents that select each answer. We multiply that percentage by the following factors: 1 (strongly approve), 0.67 (approve), 0.33 (disapprove) and 0.0 (strongly disapprove). In other words, if 50 percent of respondents select “strongly approve” and 50 percent select “approve,” the formula would be (50 x 1) + (50 x 0.67) = 83.5% approval rating.
