Alabama-Tennessee: Recap, score for Week 8 game (10/21/2017)

Top-ranked Alabama flexed its muscles on both sides of the ball Saturday as it shut down Tennessee, 45-7, at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Jalen Hurts threw for 198 yards and a touchdown, backup QB Tua Tagovailoa threw for 134 yards and a TD and ran for another as the Crimson Tide (8-0) totaled 601 yards of offense.

Damien Harris ran for 72 yards to lead Alabama’s 272-yard ground attack.

But it was the defense Saturday that stood out most. Alabama held the Vols to 7 first downs, 74 yards and 1 of 12 on third downs. The Tide defense pitched a shutout as Tennessee’s only score came on an interception return for a score.

Alabama-Tennessee recap

  • Tua Tagovailoa got some redemption after his pick-six. Tagovailoa broke free up the middle for a 23-yard touchdown run, juking defenders on his way to the endzone to make it 38-7.

  • Alabama didn’t waste time adding to its lead to open the second half. Hurts lead the Crimson Tide down the field and capped a eight-play, 76-yard drive with a 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end Irv Smith. Jr. to make it 28-0. It was the first career touchdown for Smith.
  • Tennessee’s first touchdown in three games came by way of a 97-yard interception return by linebacker Daniel Bituli. Bituli intercepted a pass from Alabama freshman Tua Tagovailoa and outran the Crimson Tide’s offense for the score to make it 28-7.
  • Alabama kicker Andy Pappanastos added a 25-yard field goal late in the third to make it 31-7.

SECOND QUARTER (Alabama 21, Tennessee 0)

  • Alabama’s fourth possession of the game was a wacky one. Hurts found tight end Irv Smith Jr. for a big gain that looked like a touchdown before Smith fumbled out of the back of the endzone. However, the turnover was negated because of a personal call penalty on Tennessee that gave Alabama the ball at the one-yard line. After the two teams exchanged penalties, Alabama finally punched it in with another one-yard score from Scarbrough to make it 14-0.
  • On the Crimson Tide’s next possession, running back Damien Harris found the endzone on an 11-yard scamper to make it 21-0 just before the half. The score gave Harris his 10th rushing touchdown of the season.

FIRST QUARTER (Alabama 7, Tennessee 0)

  • After the defense forced a three-and-out on Tennessee’s first drive, the Tide slowly grinded away at the Volunteers defense. Bo Scarbrough capped a 12-play, 63-yard drive that spanned 5:35 with a one-yard touchdown run behind Alabama’s jumbo package on 4th-and-1. The score gave Scarbrough his fourth rushing touchdown of the year.
