Getting healthy

Alabama will see a very key contributor return from an injury this week. According to coach Nick Saban, defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand should be able to practice this week. Hand has been out since the Ole Miss game with a left MCL injury. This season, Hand has 11 tackles and 1 sack.

Saban gave another important injury update. Running back Josh Jacobs has an ankle injury. He will be in a boot for “a few days.” Jacobs limped off of the field late in the Tennessee game.

Lockdown defenders

The Jim Thorpe Award named Alabama defensive backs Minkah Fitzpatrick and Levi Wallace semifinalists. The award is given to the nation’s top defensive back each year.

Many pegged Fitzpatrick as a strong contender for the award heading into the season. He has lived up to the hype. Fitzpatrick has 35 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 4 pass breakups, 1 sack and 1 interception this season.

Wallace, on the other hand, has been a surprise for most. As a former walk-on, Wallace battled with Trevon Diggs for the starting position. This season, Wallace has 23 tackles, 9 pass breakups, 3 interceptions and 2 sacks.

In addition to being named a Thorpe Award semifinalist, Wallace received SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors. Against Tennessee, he had 6 tackles and 2 sacks. He was previously honored by the SEC after the 66-3 win over Ole Miss.
