Penn State basketball’s season isn’t over yet. The Nittany Lions went on the road to knock off Notre Dame, a No. 1 seed, 73-63, in the second round of the NIT on Saturday.

Penn State (23-13) moves on to the NIT quarterfinals. The Nittany Lions will face either Marquette or Oregon — again on the road — with a chance to move onto the tournament’s semifinals at Madison Square Garden. Penn State beat Temple in the first round.

Pat Chambers’ team had a balanced attack to beat the Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. Tony Carr, who had just 2 points against Temple in the first round of the NIT, notched a game-best 24 against Notre Dame and got 10 of those points at the foul line. Josh Reaves added 18 points for the Nittany Lions and senior guard Shep Garner had 15 points and hit 4 3-pointers.

The 23 wins are the most Penn State has had since going 27-11 in the 2008-09 campaign. The Nittany Lions won the NIT that season.
