Coming off a 17-14 season, LSU accepted a bid for the NIT for the eighth time in school history, the first time since 2014. All-time, LSU is 4-8 in the NIT.

As an opponent, LSU drew in-state foe UL-Lafayette. The Ragin’ Cajuns went 27-6  in 2018 and won their regular season conference championship but lost in the postseason tournament, ensuring the team an NIT bid. The Cajuns impressed all season with a top-50 offense according to the KenPom rankings, but only beat one opponent ranked among the 100 best in the nation, and played the No. 228 strength of schedule in the nation.
