Syracuse is looking to make another magical run, just two years after landing in the Final Four after opening the tournament as a 10-seed.
Freshman forward Oshae Brissett led the team in its First Four win over Arizona State on Wednesday night with a 23 points and 12 rebounds, his 13th double-double of the season. Sophomore guard Tyus Battle chipped in 15 points and junior guard Frank Howard added 12 of his own to hold off the Sun Devils late.
Battle (19.7 points per game), Howard (14.9 ppg) and Brissett (14.9 ppg) have been consistent contributors for the Orange, and they’ll need to play big against a balanced TCU team.
Syracuse went 8-10 in ACC play with wins over Clemson, Miami and Louisville. Their win over the Tigers was the Orange’s lone victory over a ranked team, and certainly helped bolster their resume after entering Selection Sunday as a bubble team.
The Orange won two consecutive games before their ACC Tournament-ending loss to North Carolina, 78-59.
The Orange are two years removed from a national semifinal exit. Syracuse has played in the National Championship game three times, winning once (2003).
Senior forward Vladimir Brodziansky (15.1 ppg), sophomore guard Desmond Bane (12.8 ppg) and freshman forward Kouat Noi (10.3 ppg) have shared the scoring responsibilities this season.
Senior guard Kenrich Williams is averaging nearly a double-double, with 13.1 ppg and 9.3 rpg.
TCU’s best wins came against No. 22 Nevada and No. 7 West Virginia. The Horned Frogs dropped all other contests against ranked opponents, losing to No. 12 Oklahoma, No. 10 Kansas, No. 9 Oklahoma, No. 10 Texas Tech, No. 10 Kansas, No. 20 West Virginia and No. 12 Texas Tech.
This is TCU’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1997-98, when the Horned Frogs were a first-round exit. They’ve made one National Championship appearance, a loss in the 1967-68 title game.
ESPN’s matchup predictor lists TCU as a favorite with a 65.1 percent chance of winning.
According to the ACC’s official website, the conference is the winningest in NCAA Tournament history, with a 66 percent winning percentage. It is the only conference not to have a losing record in NCAA Tournament play since 1987. Two teams from the conference have won a national title in the last three seasons (Duke in 2015 and North Carolina in 2017).
