TCU-Syracuse: Preview, keys to the game

TCU comes into this game off one of the best seasons in school history, whereas this year was forgettable by Syracuse standards.

The Frogs posted their best record ever in Big 12 play (9-9) on their way to their first tournament bid since 1998. They boast a top-20 scoring offense at 83 points per game and are No. 8 nationally in adjusted offense according to KenPom.

The Orange, meanwhile, squeaked into the tournament with a losing conference record (8-10) and rank No. 130 in KenPom’s adjusted offense rankings. At 67.3 points per game, this is the lowest-scoring Syracuse team since the 1962-1963 season.

Dixon also has a stellar record against Syracuse. When he was the head coach at Pitt, he was 15-6 overall against the Orange. In his final season with the Panthers in 2015-2016, he went 3-0 against Syracuse and knocked the Orange out of the ACC Tournament.

Syracuse’s 2-3 zone defense often causes problems for opposing teams. The Orange is ranked 10th in the country in adjusted defense by KenPom. However, TCU has quality shooters everywhere, which is key to beating the zone. Three TCU players who play significant minutes shoot better than 40 percent from 3-point range.

Whoever wins Friday night will advance to face the winner of Michigan State-Bucknell on Sunday.
