North Carolina-Lipscomb basketball preview

After North Carolina handled Lipscomb easily on Friday, the Tar Heels will turn their attention to Texas A&M and the Aggies’ outstanding interior duo of junior center Tyler Davis and sophomore forward Robert Williams.

Davis (14 points, 15 rebounds) and Williams (13 points, 14 rebounds) led dominant games for the Aggies in their win over No. 10 Providence earlier in the day on Friday.

North Carolina had no problem with the free shooting Bisons, simply grabbing rebounds, running in transition and finding open looks. Those looks will be even more critical on Sunday against Texas A&M, with Davis and Williams crashing the boards.

North Carolina saw all five starters finish with afternoon in double-digit points. Junior guard Kenny Williams led the way with 18 points and senior forward Theo Pinson scored 15 points to go along with his 10 rebounds and 7 assists.

Senior guard Joel Berry II had 14 points, senior guard Cameron Johnson had 12 points and senior forward Luke Maye added 10 of his own.

The Tar Heels knocked down 51.7 percent of their shots and connected on 40.9 percent of their 3-point attempts.

It will likely be Pinson and Maye who are tasked with keeping Texas A&M’s duo in check throughout the evening.

Aside from Davis and Williams, junior guard Admon Gilder (18 points) and freshman guard TJ Starks (15 points) are players to watch for Texas A&M.

North Carolina had statement wins over No. 20 Tennessee, No. 20 Clemson and its ACC Tournament run. An exhausted North Carolina team played four games in four days just a week ago in the ACC Tourop team in tournament. After beating Syracuse, No. 24 Miami and No. 5 Duke, the Tar Heels fell to the country, Virginia, in the title game, 71-63.

North Carolina has never won the ACC title and National Championship in the same year.

The Tar Heels are the defending national champions, beating Gonzaga, 71-65 in the title game just last year. Roy Williams’ North Carolina team has only missed the NCAA Tournament one time over his tenure. Under his watch, the school has won three national championships.

Texas A&M saw a first-game exit from the SEC Tournament, dropping a loss to Alabama, 71-70.

The Aggies had statement wins over No. 11 West Virginia, No. 10 USC, Alabama and No. 24 Kentucky this year.

Texas A&M’s last NCAA Tournament appearance came in 2015-16, when the Aggies lost in the regional semifinal.

The furthest they’ve advanced in the tournament is the regional semifinal, landing there four times.

The winner between North Carolina-Texas A&M faces off against the winner of No. 6 Houston against No. 3 Michigan in Los Angeles.
