Miami vs. Loyola-Chicago basketball preview, keys to the game

Miami will have to head into the NCAA Tournament without the services of Bruce Brown Jr., coach Jim Larranaga confirmed after the announcement was made on the Hurricanes’ opening-round matchup.

The Hurricanes went 7-4 without Brown to end the season, with help from freshman guard Lonnie Walker IV (11.5 points per game), sophomore forward Dewan Huell (11.4 ppg) and freshman guard Chris Lykes (9.6 ppg) picking up the scoring burden.

Miami beat ranked teams No. 12 Minnesota, No. 24 Florida State and No. 9 North Carolina to find their way into the tournament. They had losses against No. 19 Clemson, No. 5 Duke, No. 1 Virginia and No. 12 North Carolina (ACC Tournament play).

This is the only time in school history that the program has gone to the NCAA Tournament three consecutive times. Miami has never made an Elite Eight appearance and appeared in the regional semifinal three times in the program’s history.

Huell (6.6 rebounds per game) and junior guard Anthony Lawrence II (6.6 rpg) cleaned up the boards as well.

Loyola is top heavy, with junior guard Clayton Custer (13.4 ppg), senior guard Donte Ingram (11.6 ppg), junior guard Marques Townes (11.2 ppg), senior forward Aundre Jackson (10.9 ppg) and freshman center Cameron Krutwig (10.5 ppg) taking on the scoring load.

Ingram (6.5 rpg) and Krutwig (6.3 rpg) will need to play big on the glass to keep the Ramblers in this one.

Loyola’s 28-5 record was bolstered by a midseason win over No. 5 Florida (65-59) and a Missouri Valley Conference championship. The Ramblers have as good a shot as any to knock off the Hurricanes.

Loyola won the 1963 national championship and has five NCAA Tournament appearances.

ESPN’s matchup predictor has Miami as the favorite, with 57.5 percent chance of beating Loyola-Chicago.

The winner of Miami vs. Loyola-Chicago will move on to face off against the winner of No. 3 Tennessee and No. 14 Wright State. At the top of the region stands No. 1 Virginia, which has only lost two games all season.

According to the ACC’s official website, the conference is the winningest in NCAA Tournament history, with a 66 percent winning percentage. It is the only conference not to have a losing record in NCAA Tournament play since 1987. Two teams from the conference have won a national title in the last three seasons (Duke in 2015 and North Carolina in 2017).
