2017 SEC Country Power Poll: Where South Carolina is ranked (Week 8)

The South Carolina football team was off this past week after improving to 5-2 (3-2 SEC) on the road against Tennessee.

The Gamecocks jumped up one spot to No. 8 in the SEC Country Power Poll this week. All three of South Carolina’s league wins were against teams that are ranked lower in the poll: Tennessee (10), Arkansas (12) and Missouri (14).

Its opponent Saturday is Vanderbilt, at No. 13.

Its two losses in SEC play were to Texas A&M (5) and Kentucky (9). South Carolina’s best win this season was in the opener against N.C. State. The Wolfpack are ranked 14th in the most recent AP Top 25.

Through seven games, sophomore quarterback Jake Bentley has completed 129 of 212 passes for 1,585 yards with 12 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. He’s fourth in the SEC in yards and tied for fourth in touchdown passes.

Redshirt sophomore running back Ty’Son Williams leads the Gamecocks with 328 yards rushing. Sophomore Rico Dowdle, who’s out until bowl season because of a fractured left fibula, is second with 206 yards. Both have scored a touchdown. Redshirt sophomore A.J. Turner is third with 146 yards.

Sophomore wide receiver Bryan Edwards leads South Carolina with 33 catches for 420 yards. Junior tight end Hayden Hurst is second with 19 catches for 297 yards and is third with 2 touchdowns.

Defensively, sophomore linebacker T.J. Brunson has a team-high 56 tackles. Senior linebacker Skai Moore is second with 51. His 6 tackles for loss are second only to sophomore ‘Buck’ D.J. Wonnum, who leads the way with 8.5. He also leads the way with 4 sacks. Senior defensive end Dante Sawyer has 3 sacks. He’s first with 4 forced fumbles.

After the game this week against Vanderbilt, South Carolina travels to Georgia on Saturday, Nov. 4, and follows that with three consecutive home games to close out the regular season against Florida, Wofford and rival Clemson.
