It took seven attempts, but Missouri finally put together a complete game in a 68-21 thumping over Idaho.
Yes, it was against the Vandals — a lame-duck Sun Belt team that will drop down to the Football Championship Subdivision next year. But Missouri couldn’t put a complete game together against FCS Missouri State to start the year, and hadn’t been on the winning side of a game since.
At 2-5, Missouri still has a shot at bowl eligibility with a plethora of winnable games ahead. And for one day, Missouri fans can ogle at some ludicrous stats from an impressive win.
Drew Lock threw for 467 and 6 touchdowns, overcoming an interception on his first pass to put together three straight solid performances. Receiver J’Mon Moore caught 11 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown. Redshirt freshman tight end Albert Okwuegbunam made three first-quarter trips to the end zone on Lock touchdown passes.
Despite those numbers, though, the SEC Country Power Poll voters remain unimpressed. Missouri is once again 14th in the weekly power rankings; it’s the same position the Tigers have been in every week this season.
Missouri needs a run to finish this season strong, and the back half of the Tigers schedule is less than impressive. Not only do none of Missouri’s five remaining opponents have winning records, but only one is even at .500 — and that may not be for long. Florida, at 3-3, faces third-ranked Georgia this Saturday.
Is a bowl game out of the question? No, not now. But Missouri must put together more complete games, especially on defense, to give Barry Odom some breathing room as he heads into this third season as Tigers coach.
