Freshman center Steve McElvene scored 15 points, and five other players scored in double figures for the Dayton men’s basketball team in a 96-69 exhibition victory over Saginaw Valley State on Saturday at UD Arena.
McElvene hit 7 of 9 shots from the field and grabbed seven rebounds.
Charles Cooke and Scoochie Smith each scored 13. Kendall Pollard and freshmen Ryan Mikesell and Sam Miller had 10. Kyle Davis and Darrell Davis each scored eight. Freshman Xeyrius Williams scored five, and freshman John Crosby had four.
The Flyers shot 51 percent from the field and 36 percent from 3-point range. Pollard, Smith, Kyle Davis, Cooke and McElvene started. Darrell Davis and Miller were the first players off the bench.
Dayton forced 18 turnovers and committed 11. The Flyers made 21 of 31 free throws.
Dayton opens the season at 7 p.m. Nov. 13 against Southeast Missouri State at UD Arena.
