Dayton’s Mikesell named A-10 Rookie of the Week

Dayton freshman forward Ryan Mikesell won the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week award Monday. He scored 21 points in his debut for the Flyers on Friday against Southeast Missouri State.

Mikesell, a St. Henry graduate, fell two points short of matching the UD record for points scored by a freshman in his first game. Marcus Johnson scored 23 against Austin Peay in 2006, and Chris Wright scored 22 against East Tennessee State in 2007.

Mikesell made 7 of 9 shots from the field, including 5 of 7 3-pointers. He had eight rebounds, four assists and no turnovers. He scored 15 points in the second half as the Flyers won their season opener 84-53.

Mikesell is the first Dayton player to win the rookie of the week award since Dyshawn Pierre in November 2012.

Dayton returns to action at 1 p.m. Tuesday at UD Arena against Alabama. The game is part of ESPN’s Tip-Off Marathon.
