On Wednesday’s radio broadcast of the Reds’ 6-5 win over the Colorado Rockies at Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati Reds broadcaster Marty Brennaman said baseball’s new slide rule at second base is harming the product.
“I think this game is legislating it into a game of sissies,” Brennaman said in response to a question from a listener. “They’re taking away all the contact. The rule at second base is ridiculous. And ... it’s a kneejerk reaction. ... And they’re seemingly trying to modify that thing on the run.
“I think it’s ridiculous. I really, truly do.”
The new rule is designed to prevent contact with a fielder for the sole purpose of breaking up a double play.
