Bengals bring in Miami WR for a rookie camp tryout

Shortly after the first practice of rookie camp ended Friday evening, the Cincinnati Bengals felt they needed another receiver so they offered Miami University’s Jared Murphy a chance to chance to compete on a tryout basis today and Sunday.

“They called me at 6 p.m. (Friday) and told me to get here as quick as I could,” Murphy said. “I threw some clothes in a bag and hit the road and got here in about an hour.”

The 5-foot-10, 182-pound receiver was still in Oxford working out and doing odd jobs to make money after graduating with a degree in sports leadership and management.

His goal is to become a coach, but he has no problem putting that on hold.

“I had a good relationship with all of the coaches at Miami and they sat down with me and said ‘you really seem like you’d be good in this profession and should highly consider it,’” Murphy said. “I was just at the point where I was about to start pursuing it when I got this call.

“I just want to learn as much as I could as quick as I could so I can put myself in position to get out there and actually be able to make some plays,” he added. “I’m just trying to retain as much information as I can and get out there and open some eyes.”
