Anthony Grant Show highlights: Dayton coach looks back at Detroit Mercy, Auburn games

Grant talks with WHIO’s Larry Hansgen on Monday night

Dayton Flyers coach Anthony Grant reflected on a 98-59 victory against Detroit Mercy and an 82-72 loss at No. 8 Auburn last week during his weekly show Monday on WHIO Radio with Larry Hansgen.

Here are some highlights:

On Detroit game: "We were really concerned. They were coming off a loss at Akron before our game and had the nation's second-leading scorer and some guys who can really shoot it. I thought our guys did a really good job of focusing and understanding that it was really important for us to protect home court."

On setting dunk records against Detroit: "We had 30 assists in the game on 38 field goals. The guys did a great job of moving the ball, hitting the open guy and finishing plays."

On Auburn game: "First true road game. It was a different challenge for our guys just in terms of getting mentally and physically prepared. As talented as they are, they presented problems on both sides."

On the slow start against Auburn: "It was a game of spurts. They came out and hit us in the mouth right away. Our guys had to respond. Our guys did a pretty good job of maintaining their composure, staying together and understanding we needed to execute better, needed to attack them better, and as the game went on, we were able to do that more consistently."

On Dayton's outside shooting: "It all comes down to getting our shots, the quality shots."

On team's rebounding against Auburn: "I think we ended up out-rebounding Auburn by 10, and going into the game, we had several concerns when you look at the problems they pose. One of them was turnovers. We didn't pass that test. We had 23 turnovers. Another major factor for us was being able to keep them off the glass. They were generating 16 offensive rebounds a game for about 20 points, so between turning people over and creating easy baskets and generating second shots, they were getting about 45 points a game, which is phenomenal, probably tops in the country. We did a pretty good job of limiting their opportunities."

On exam week: "If you're going to start your preparations in what you need to do the week of finals, it's a little too late. Our guys have done a really good job all semester of taking care of their business in the classroom. For me, that's a part of us preparing to win because if I don't have their full attention because they're worried about something they didn't do that they were supposed to do last week or last month, that's going to take away from their ability to be as good as they can be on the court."
