5 questions for the Reds to answer in the second half of the season
The second half of the Major League Baseball season begins for the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night.  They finished the first half on a hot streak, but they are still in last place in the National League Central.  A postseason appearance may be out of the question, but there are a lot of things the club can accomplish between now...

Football and head injuries: North Carolina coach unfairly criticized for observations
I had the day off Wednesday, and I’m thankful for at least two reasons.  One, I got to spend the day with my 2-year-old. As they say, those are days we never get back.  Two, I missed the hysteria over what Larry Fedora said about football and head injuries, although from what I can tell the quality of discussion...

WATCH: Cleveland Browns ‘Hard Knocks’ trailer from HBO
The Cleveland Browns begin training camp Wednesday.  It will be no ordinary preseason in Berea as NFL Films cameras will be there to follow the team and document preparations for a 2018 season.  Football fans hardly have a hard time getting hyped for the season — and that is particularly true of Browns backers — but...

Hartman: How the Cincinnati Reds should approach the rest of 2018 (and beyond)
What will the Reds do in the second half?  This is a two-pronged question. What will they do on the field, and what will they do off it?  If I knew the answer to the first one, I would probably be making some phone calls to Las Vegas.  As for the second, they have three options: Sell everything they can in hopes of being great...

Hartman: Should MLB consider split-season division champions?
With the All-Star break ongoing, here’s something to ponder to help pass the time:  The thought crossed my mind as I wondered what might have been for the 2018 Cincinnati Reds, who lost an astounding 18 of their first 21 games but have recently been one of the best teams in either league.  It’s too bad April was...

Xenia’s Samari Curtis, a one-time Xavier recruit, wants to be more than a scorer
Samari Curtis sounds more interested in improving his game this summer than figuring out where he will take it in 2019.  The Xenia basketball standout committed to Xavier in February but reopened his recruitment in May.  In an interview Monday, he said the Musketeers have remained in touch while Dayton, Cincinnati, Louisville...

Michigan football sending local alumnus to Big Ten Football Media Days
Looks like Michigan football will count a player from the Miami Valley to be among its senior leaders on defense for the second year in a row.  At least that’s one thing that can be gleaned from Tyree Kinnel being among the Wolverines’ representatives at Big Ten Media Days in Chicago next week.  Kinnel, a fourth-year...

Former Ohio State football player passes away
Highland Local Schools announced Monday afternoon the passing of former Ohio State football player Mike Kudla.  No cause of death was released, but Kudla was only 34.  After graduating from Highland in 2002, Kudla played linebacker and defensive end for the Buckeyes from 2002-05.  He was an All-Big Ten first-team pick in 2005...

Pro Football Focus pessimistic about Bengals offensive line progress
Pro Football Focus still thinks the Cincinnati Bengals offensive line will be bad this season.  This seems to be predicated on two things: Ohio State rookie Billy Price being no better than last year’s center and Trey Hopkins both being the starting right guard and being no better than he was a year ago.  I’m not sure...

5 things to know about the local high school football season (Vol. 1)
High school football practice is getting closer, and our team previews are already rolling out.  Miss any?  Don’t worry! We’ll be recapping them periodically.  Here is version one:  1.
