Calm tonight; weekend storm to bring 2-4 inches of snow for most, 4+ inches to the north

Skies will be partly cloudy tonight with overnight lows in the lower 20s ahead of a weekend winter storm that could bring several inches of snow to the region.

The snow is expected to arrive around 7 p.m. Saturday and continue through the day on Sunday. Accumulations are expected between 2 and 4 inches south of Interstate 70 and the potential for 4 or more inches along and north of I-70, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington. The heaviest snowfall is expected late Saturday night into Sunday morning, with slick conditions expected on area roadways.

During the day on Saturday, skies will be mostly cloudy and a high around 36 degrees.

In the evening though, the NWS predicted we will start to see a chance of rain and snow as a low-pressure system moves through the Ohio Valley. The chance of rain will quickly drop off as snow chances rapidly rise, with all snow likely around 7 p.m.

A Winter Weather Watch goes into effect at 7 p.m. for Champaign, Darke, Logan and Miami counties and lasts until 7 a.m. Sunday.

Heavier snowfalls are expected to the north. Especially around and north of Interstate 70 the NWS predicted 4 and more inches of snow, There is a chance of freezing rain after midnight, with overnight lows will be around 30 degrees.

Starting a few hours before dawn on Sunday, we will start to see snow mixing with rain as temperatures rise above freezing, then switching to all rain throughout the day. Highs will reach about 39 degrees.

Sunday night, though, a few hours after dark the NWS predicted snow will mix back in, before rain chances drop out after midnight. Precipitation chances overnight will slowly decline, although snow and rain will remain likely until a few hours after midnight. Lows will be in the upper 20s.

Skies will be mostly cloudy on Monday with a chance of snow in the morning and highs in the lower 30s.

The National Weather Service said it has been more than two years since the Cincinnati airport has recorded more than 2.5 inches of snow and almost two years now since single-digit temperatures hit there.

It’s been more than two years since the NWS issued its last Winter Storm Warning on Jan. 20, 2019. On that day, the Miami Valley saw as much as 9 inches of snow reported, with most communities getting around 3 to 4 inches.

Winter Storm Warnings are issued when heavy snow of 6 inches in 12 hours or 8 inches in 24 hours falls. There also are Winter Storm Watches that warn residents that conditions are favorable for a winter storm event and Winter Storm Advisories, which are issued when 3 to 5 inches of snow falls in 12 hours.
