Customers reacted with sadness.
“Absolutely heartbroken to hear this news. Your establishment was a family staple for us over the years,” wrote Cari Simington-Lairson. “So many wonderful memories with loved ones that are no longer with us. We always loved your orange bread, potato soup and chicken salad. You will be greatly missed!”
“This place will be greatly missed. What a wonderful little country blast from the past it is,” Rachel Estep wrote.
The businesses operated on the site of the former Cross Roads school, a two-room schoolhouse built in 1868.
According to the Clark County Historical Society, the last class to graduate was during the 1937-38 school year. The property became a private home in 1941, and in 1992, the Heart of Country gift shop opened, followed by Teaberries Café in 1998. Some of the original wood flooring remained in the restaurant.
Teaberries offered inside seating areas and outside dining areas that included a porch and two patios. It served as a space to host special events such as baby and bridal showers, tea parties and holiday events. The restaurant was known for its salads and sandwiches.
The Heart of Country gift shop offered country decor, seasonal decor, curtains, table linens, furniture, jewelry, candles, bedding, grapevine trees, wreaths and more.
The Heart of Country and Teaberries Café closure post also said: “We also want to thank our incredible staff for their awesome work ethic, friendly customer service and many cherished memories made at work. We are very sorry to break the news.”
