Small earthquake, aftershock rattle Southeast US overnight

People in the Southeast U.S. were awakened by an earthquake early Wednesday morning, according to our news partners WSB-TV in Atlanta. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake happened about 4:15 a.m. near Decatur, Tenn. It had a magnitude of 4.4

A magnitude 3.3 aftershock struck about 15 minutes later.

The earthquake happened along the new Madrid Fault Line, which runs along the state lines of Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi.

The earthquake was the second-strongest on record in east Tennessee, according to the USGS. The strongest on record is a magnitude 4.7, recorded near Maryville in 1973.
