Nero, a K-9 with the Oregon State Police, made the discovery during a traffic stop Nov. 21 on I-5, the television station reported.

"During contact with the driver and while taking enforcement action, several factors led me to be suspicious of criminal activity. I requested consent to search the vehicle, which both the driver and the registered owner (passenger) denied," KATU reported, citing the trooper’s report. "I applied OSP K9 Nero to conduct an exterior sniff of the vehicle. K9 Nero alerted to the odor of narcotics from the vehicle.”

That prompted the trooper to conduct a probable cause search of the vehicle, and the meth was located in several bags in the vehicle’s trunk, the television station reported.

Nero’s sharp nose led to the arrests of the driver, Gerardo Antonio Ceballos, 19, of Salem, and Carol Jean Gilbertson, 57, of Salem. Both were booked into the Lane County Jail, KATU reported.
