Ohio doctor gives self $1.5M for possible run for governor

Most politicos running for Ohio governor want to gin up as much free publicity as they can for their campaigns. Not Jon Heavey.

The only public indication Heavey wants to be Ohio governor is he established a campaign committee on Dec. 18 and loaned it $1.5 million on Jan. 31. The website jonheavey.com is inactive.

Heavey, who could not be reached for comment, lives in Rocky River, works at the Cleveland Clinic and is a licensed medical doctor, according to public documents.

Like other governor candidates, Heavey must turn in valid signatures from at least 1,000 Ohio registered voters by Feb. 7 to qualify for the primary ballot.

The loan, which can be canceled at any time, puts him just behind Democrat Richard Cordray who has $2-million in campaign cash and ahead of former state representative Connie Pillich who reported just under $1-million on hand.

Heavey is an Army veteran who was deployed to Iraq in 2007 and 2008 as a battalion surgeon, according to his LinkedIn page. He holds an engineering degree from Dartmouth College, a medical degree from Vanderbilt University and a master’s in business administration from Yale University, his LinkedIn profile says.

On his Twitter account, he describes himself as “hopelessly optimistic buffalo sports fan. often cries into beer.”
