A K-9 officer is being lauded for the actions he took in taking down a suspect who led California Highway Patrol officers on a pursuit for nearly an hour early Friday morning, officials said.
Fontana police said officers were responding to a stalking call involving assault with a deadly weapon at a home in Fontana when they encountered Julio Vasquez, 31, who refused to stop his vehicle, KABC reported. Vasquez allegedly violated the restraining order filed by his estranged wife when he showed up at her workplace and tried to strike her with his vehicle, KABC reported. California Highway Patrol officers became involved in the chase that spanned three freeways, according to KABC.

CHP used spike strips and a PIT maneuver to stop the fleeing suspect. Once the pursuit ended, Corona officers said Vasquez remained uncooperative. Corona police officers shattered the driver’s side window with rubber bullets and that’s when Duke, a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois, sprang into action, police said. Duke leaped through the shattered car window to apprehend Vasquez.
