September 8, 2015 will be a day forever remembered for Waffle House: It served up its 1 billionth freshly made waffle.
The Norcross-based restaurant served up the lucky customer, Shanneil McCollum, at its location in Atlanta. And what kind of waffle did Shanneil order? It was the apple crumble waffle.
Waffle House has been busy tracking the number of waffles and predicted the monumental moment would happen this week – which just so happens to be National Waffle Week.
Waffle House restaurants were from the idea of two neighbors in Avondale Estates, GA. Joe Rogers Sr. and Tom Forkner wanted to open a 24-hour restaurant that focused on people – customers and associates - while serving high-quality food at a great value. Their dream became a reality when the first Waffle House restaurant opened its doors on Labor Day in 1955.
"We never dreamed that Waffle House would be as big as it is today when we opened our doors in 1955," says Forkner. "In the beginning, we thought we would open about ten locations and then go fishing."
The Waffle House system now operates over 1,800 locations in 25 states.
