"He was in good spirits, in a sense. He was wagging his tail," Paws and Claws vet tech Nikki Jones told WIS, "but he had barely any energy. He could barely even lift his head, you know, to give us a kiss."

Veterinary staff believe that the boxer puppy, Sammie, was shot in the head, spray painted and dragged behind a car.

Rescue Dogs Rock NYC said a woman brought the puppy as a stray last week to the rescue's South Carolina vet partner.

Another rescue dog, Simon, heard the puppy's whimpering as Sammie was on an X-ray table.

"Simon heard him crying in there and his ears perked up," Jones said. "He came in and just very gently jumped up on the X-ray table with his one paw and was kind of like, 'Hey, bud. What's wrong? Don't worry.'"

A photo of the dog comforting the pup has been circulating across the internet.

"We see dogs like this every single day, and it's so heartbreaking," Jones told WIS. "But none of them get any attention. None of them get any funding because none of them happen to get a good picture, you know. That's the reality of it."

The rescue posted updates on Sammie last week, including his first surgery May 3. Vets tried to fix his back right leg, which had the bone worn down, and his left front leg, which was infected.

The rescue is raising funds through a YouCaring page. It has surpassed its $17,500 goal with over $26,000 raised.
