Amid declining attendance since the critical documentary “Blackfish” was released, SeaWorld officials on Monday announced a plan to phase out its killer whale shows at its San Diego facility.
A new, “informative” orca experience offering a more natural setting for the sea mammal will take its place in 2017, according to the San Diego Tribune.
Some of the $100 million planned for a killer whale tank expansion plan at the park will be used for the new attraction.
It’s possible that the whale shows will end at the park’s other facilities in Orlando and San Antonio, but there is no mention in the California plan, according to the San Diego Tribune.
