San Francisco TV crew robbed, security guard shot while covering teachers strike

A San Francisco TV news crew was robbed and their security guard shot about 5 p.m. Sunday in Oakland, California, authorities said.

KPIX-TV reported that two robbers targeted one of the station's photographers, John Anglin, and reporter Joe Vazquez, who were interviewing people about a teachers strike.

One suspect pointed a gun at Anglin and told him to hand over his equipment, Vazquez tweeted Sunday evening.

"John abandoned the camera, took cover inside the news van where I was and told me to get down," Vazquez wrote in his tweets, which included videos from the scene.

Gunfire erupted between one suspect and the crew's guard, Matt Meredith, The Associated Press reported.

"We heard a flurry of loud gunshots. Very close! More shots, I saw a guy drag the camera away and saw our guard, Matt, was hit. Quickly called 9-1-1," Vazquez wrote.

Meredith, who was struck in the leg, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to KPIX.

"We believe Matt is going to be okay," Vazquez wrote. "His wounds do not appear to be life threatening. He is a retired @berkeleypoliceofficer. He got some shots off at the robber. We are trying to confirm if a 'walk-in' gunshot wound patient at a local hospital may have been the perpetrator."

Oakland police detained one suspect after a car chase and arrested another after he showed up at a hospital with gunshot wounds, KPIX reported.
