Russia will not be permitted to compete in any major international sporting events for the next four years due to doping.

The World Anti-Doping Agency, or Wada, made the ruling Monday that will prevent Russian athletes from competing for their home country in events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the BBC reported.

The decision was unanimous after Russia's Anti Doping Agency manipulated data given to investigators earlier this year, the BBC reported.

Russia was forced to give the investigators information after it had been reinstated last year after being suspended for doping.

Those athletes who were not part of the doping investigation will still be able to compete, but will be unaffiliated, The Washington Post reported.

They were also permitted to compete in last year's Winter Olympics in South Korea, The New York Times reported.

Russian officials are expected to appeal the decision, the Times reported.
