Officials: Baby drowns in bathtub after mother falls asleep

A 7-month-old is dead after his mother said she fell asleep while in the bathtub with him, authorities in Florida said.

Police said Jennifer Wroubel was giving her son a bath around 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Wroubel told police that she got into the tub with her son, Dylan, after he began to cry. She said she gave him a bath and played with him for 15 minutes, then fell asleep while they were still in the tub.

Wroubel said she woke up and found the boy floating in the water, police said.

Wroubel took him out of the tub, called 911 and began chest compressions, according to authorities.

Fire rescue took him to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Clay County, where he was pronounced dead.

Tom Gresh lives down the road from the home where the boy lived. He said his family and others will do whatever they can to help support Wroubel and her family as they deal with the loss.

“I can’t even imagine what’s she’s going through, the guilt she must feel," Gresh said. "If we can do anything to allay some of that guilt and take away some of her hurt and some of her pain, we’ll all get together and figure out what we need to do to get it done.”

Officials said there was no sign of trauma on the child.

Clay County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Children and Families are investigating.

No final cause of death can be determined until the medical examiner finishes a report, which could take several weeks.
