A North Carolina woman whose hands were crushed while changing a flat tire kept her wits about her and managed to call 911 by using her toes, authorities said.

The 54-year-old woman from Charlotte, whose identity was not revealed, got a flat tire Sunday as she was driving north on Interstate 95 in Colleton County, South Carolina, WCSC reported.

According to Colleton County Fire-Rescue officials, the jack slipped as the woman was changing the tire, the television station reported. Both of the woman’s hands were crushed between the tire and the vehicle’s fender.

"She was trapped alone on the side of the dark interstate, experiencing excruciating pain," Colleton County Fire-Rescue officials said in a statement.

Over the next 35 minutes, the woman managed to slip off one shoe and attempted to call 911, WCSC reported.

“After many attempts, she was able to dial 911 with her toes and advise them of her predicament,” fire officials said in a statement. “Fire-Rescue units were dispatched to the rural stretch of I-95.”

Fire rescue units used a prybar without success, but then deflated the tire and were eventually able to free one of the woman's hands, according to CNN.

In a statement, fire officials said they used a Holmatro Hydraulic Spreader to lift the car, which freed her other hand.

Fire officials said the woman suffered severe damage to both hands and all of her fingers, WCSC reported. She was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Her condition was unknown, the television station reported.
