NASA captures image of sand dunes that look like Morse code message from Mars

A NASA image shows a dune formation on Mars with an apparent message.

The unusual dune formation looks like Morse code and was created after bidirectional winds circulated around a sand-filled depression, likely an old impact crater.

"(The crater) has focused the wind, and also limited the amount of sand available for formation of the dunes," Veronica Bray, the specialist who analyzed the image for NASA, told Gizmodo.

Dune formation usually offers insight into wind direction. However, because of the complexity of the dunes, it's difficult for researchers to determine wind direction, according to a NASA blog post about the image.

The image was taken Feb. 6 by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment camera.
