The tech giant emailed a statement to affected users Friday, saying a Microsoft support agent’s credentials were compromised, allowing unauthorized access to some accounts between Jan. 1 and March 28, 2019. It’s unclear how many users were affected by the hack.

Email services managed by Microsoft include @outlook.com, @msn.com and @hotmail.com, TechCrunch and The Verge reported.

The hackers could have accessed affected users’ email address, folder names, the subject lines of emails and the names of other email addresses the user communicates with, “but not the content of any emails or attachments,” or login details, Microsoft said in the statement.

Microsoft said it still recommends users change their passwords, the statement said.

The company said it doesn’t know what data was viewed by the hackers or why.

The email to users can be read here.
