Michigan State Police received a call Wednesday reporting three dogs walking along the Lodge Freeway, the Detroit News reported. Four troopers responded, and with the help of a nearby citizen, they were able to round up the dogs and put them into their patrol cars, the newspaper reported.

The dogs were kept overnight at the Metro South Post offices, while police posted on social media in an attempt to find the dogs' owners, MLive reported.

Lt. Mike Shaw, of the Michigan State Police, said the dogs were returned to their owners Wednesday afternoon, according to the Detroit News.

In a tweet, state police officials advised residents, "Keep an eye on your pets, as these stories usually don't have a happy ending."
