A Michigan father is in police custody after officers say he killed four children and injured their mother at a Dearborn Heights home.

>> UPDATE: Man accused of killing 4 children served 16 years in prison for pregnant wife's death

According to Detroit's WXYZ, the man, whose name has not yet been released, called police early Wednesday to tell them that he had killed his family. Officers said he waited for them on his porch.

WDIV reported that two teens – a 17-year-old girl and 19-year-old boy – were fatally shot in the basement. Two girls, ages 4 and 5, died from carbon monoxide poisoning in a car with a modified tail pipe, police said.

The children's mother, who was reportedly attacked and shot, was taken to a nearby hospital, where she is in critical condition, WXYZ reported.

The man is believed to be the father of two of the children and the stepfather of the others.

"It is a very tragic situation," Dearborn Heights Mayor Dan Paletko said, according to WXYZ. "Words can't explain what took place here."
