A Massachusetts man armed with a crossbow accidentally killed his neighbor Wednesday while trying to save him from a dog attack, authorities said.

According to WWLP-TV, police arrived at an Adams apartment around noon after receiving a call that two pit bulls were attacking a man. The dogs tried to attack the officers, who shot the animals, the Berkshire District Attorney's Office said.

While searching the home, police discovered a dead man who had suffered a crossbow wound, as well as an unharmed child, the news outlet reported.

Investigators later determined that the 911 call had come from a concerned neighbor who tried to shoot the dogs with his crossbow, WWLP reported. He ended up hitting one dog with one arrow, which also struck the man, authorities said.

Law enforcement officials later identified the neighbor killed as 27-year-old Joshua Jadusingh.

Police said the man's death was an accident but are continuing to investigate, WWLP reported. No further information was immediately available.
