The incident happened when police responded to a report of a man threatening to stab bus passengers and light them on fire, Worcester police said in a Facebook post.

The man was hiding behind shrubs and refused to come out, police said. Police called the K-9 and warned the man that they would deploy the dog if he didn't follow their commands, police said.

The man allegedly continued to ignore the officers' commands, and officers subsequently deployed the K-9, a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois named Beebs.

When Beebs approached the man, police said the man stabbed him with a screwdriver.

"K9 Beebs was suffering from a laceration to his mouth and several wounds to his head with swelling," the statement said. "He was rushed to a local animal hospital to be treated."

Police were able to arrest the man.

Beebs has since been released from the animal hospital. He's been with the Police Department for about three years.
