Man killed girlfriend before killing himself during chase, police say

A Rockmart man is accused of killing his girlfriend in Powder Springs before killing himself while being chased by officers early Monday.

Polk County police Chief Kenny Dodd said his officers spotted Tandy Bernard Borders, 44, driving around midnight.

Cobb County police had issued an alert to be on the lookout for Borders. Dodd said the BOLO mentioned Borders as a suspect in his girlfriend’s death and that he may have been suicidal.

“The guy tried to outrun us and shot (himself) while he was running,” Dodd said.

Cobb police said they were withholding the woman’s identity until they can inform her family. The department said it appears her next of kin live outside the country.

According to a news release, Cobb cops found the woman’s body lying in the front yard of a home in the 2200 block of Manatee Court, near Lost Mountain Park, about 10 p.m. Sunday.

The department didn’t say how they determined that Borders was the suspect.

Dodd said he has known Borders since he coached him in high school football and can’t think of a time Borders has been in criminal trouble.

He said he saw Borders a couple of weeks ago and nothing seemed wrong.

“I’m shocked,” the chief said.
