A news release from the Kansas City Police Department's website said a man driving a Bird scooter Thursday night on a sidewalk hit a police SUV.
A police sergeant said he was driving his patrol car, saw a man steering a scooter erratically at 9:45 p.m.and then heard a "thud," according to the report.
The sergeant then observed the 47-year-old man, who was not identified, sitting on the ground with cuts on his face and an overturned scooter next to him, KMBC reported.
Other police who responded interviewed the man, the television station reported. According to the police report, the man said he drank four beers over two hours at a bar. The man then saw the scooter and decided to "hop on" because there were no electric vehicles in his hometown. He claimed he "just got excited" and ran into the police SUV, according to the report.
The man was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, according to the report.
According to a city ordinance, electric scooters are not allowed to be driven on sidewalks, WDAF reported.
