A woman was killed and five people were wounded early Monday when a man opened fire on a Greyhound bus traveling on a California interstate highway, authorities said.

Police were notified of an active shooter on the bus, traveling from Los Angeles to the San Francisco area, at e 1:27 a.m., California Highway Patrol Sgt. Brian Pennings told the Los Angeles Times. The bus was traveling north on Interstate 5 when the shooting occurred, the newspaper reported.

Pennings said the bus driver was able to convince the gunman to exit the vehicle and leave his black handgun behind, KGO-TV reported. The driver then drove to the next exit and parked at a gas station to wait for first responders to arrive, the television station reported.

CHP spokesman Steve Loftus said the gunman boarded the bus in Los Angeles, but it was unclear where he was from, CNN reported.

The 51-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, Pennings told the Times. The injured passengers were taken to area hospitals, Pennings said. The ages, genders and conditions of the wounded passengers were not available, the newspaper reported.

Authorities apprehended the suspect "without incident" at about 1:34 a.m., The New York Times reported.

“At this time I do not have a motive for you,” Pennings told the newspaper, adding that police were interviewing witnesses.

Pennings told The New York Times the driver acted quickly and professionally.

“The driver handled the situation very professionally,” Pennings told the newspaper. “He handled the situation appropriately to try to minimize any more possible victims.

“I’ve been on 25 years and I’ve never seen this happen. We’re thankful that the bus driver acted quickly and was able to get the bus pulled over in Stockton and get the situation neutralized without further incident.”
